The most common mistake that aspirants usually make is the common belief that PMP is an exam based on PMBOK. Please note that PMP is more about the PMIsm – which simply refers to having an attitude as an ideal Project Manager.
You should notice that PMBOK is just a reference guide and is not enough alone for your preparation. It is an open framework of best practices however not a boundary for PMP.
There are several resources available in the market that will lead you to your destination. Let us quickly dive right in:
STEP BY STEP GUIDE
I highly recommend you all to download the Free PMP Study Material that covers all the important concepts with relevant explanations as per the latest PMI guidelines.
PMBOK
The Project Management Body of Knowledge or commonly known as PMBOK is the official release guide that PMI allows you to download for free if you are a PMI member.
The latest version of PMBOK when this article was written was PMBOKv6 which has whooping 980 Pages. This guide is a dry-read and may not be a treat to read for the aspirants.
NOTE: As per a survey 95% aspirants read the PMBOK during the preparation, however I personally never read a single page of it.
I would suggest that the aspirants read at least once, simply glide through the book as fast as you can without putting much brain in it – this will help you later on with main preparation ahead.
REFERENCE BOOK
This is the main guiding star which will help you throughout your preparation journey. There are following top 5 books available in the market:
